Bush flies in

I'm sorry to say it, and clearly it is not a comprehensive condemnation of the entire South, but it does seem that any society that builds and builds until it has an enormous city on land below sea level, and next to an enormous great river is several coffees short of a breakfast. What the holy hell were theyt thinking of? But that is for later. For now, the question is what is Dubya doing?

He seems to be able to mobilise hundreds and thousands of millions of dollars a day to pour into Iraq, but is apparently doing fuck all to address the disaster on a national scale.

R and I have had this exact conversation over the last few days. I mean, they have an area there called 'The Bowl'. That can't be good. It is a hollow bowl like area, with buildings in it. I heard Celine Dion gave 1 million dollars to the relief fund. Some people may not like her.. but good for her. Makes me proud.

Is it REALLY such a suprise that G.W. has been so lacking in an appropriate response and action?

Great post Beachhutman! You always seem to choose the appropriate titles! ) I totally agree with you. What were they thinking?!
I suppose mankind still seems to think they can get away with many things. Why they haven't learned from the past (historically speaking) is beyond me. What do you think will happen to the country when California falls into the ocean??? ANd if people still believe that is won't .. well .. only time will tell.
I heard on the radio this morning, someone comment on the actions of the US Federal Government. They seem to act quickly on things where they have a vested interest on (i.e. War on Iraq), and they have no hesitation at all when it comes to intruding into our lives. But when it comes to helping people that really need the help ... there always seems to be a delay.
Sioned: Wow, I did not know that about Celine Dion. Wow, That's great!

I think the city has been slowly sinking over the past couple of centuries. I guess it was hubris that they thought they could keep it in control.
This is an administration of children, playing war games and grabbing at money without giving one goddamned thought to the welfare of the people. May they all rot in Hell, if only I believed in that. May they all rot in jail, then.

I've got a friend in Baton Rouge. I got an email from her today, it's posted over on my blog. The whole state is straining under this.

I was in New Orleans about four years ago, at the Monteleone in French 1/4 and at the convention centre. Been all round those malls where people are now looting etc. It's wierd to see the devastation compared to how I remember it. But there's a stange lax attitude to getting help in there, which I find unbelievable. There must be thousands of troops that they could have flown in to marshall the situation as well as comandeering production of bottled water, food and urgent medication. To drop in using Chinooks. Especially around the areas of convention centre and superdome. The US spends BILLIONS on Arms development alone, let alone the Iraq war. The initial expenditure would have been a fraction. This makes a mockery of the USA blundering around the world talking Democracy and Law & Order when the government there seems happy to allow anarchy and needless death to ensue in their own back yard. But I think that's how the poorer southern states of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana are percieved as not really worth bothering about.

Too little too late if you ask me. My thoughts go out to all affected by this terrible tradegy. Great post by the way.

I just read that some of that has to do with the fact that poor settlers could not afford to live in the higher areas of town. They also probably knew nothing of the potential dangers of living there. Well now of course there is NO excuse to not remedy this situation.
Thankfully the support has finally arrived, although too late for many...
